Knowledge Corridor

SKIL has identified the Knowledge sector as a fast growing sector, the development of which will play a critical role in the emergence of India as an economic superpower.

The world is increasingly moving towards a knowledge-based economy wherein the nation’s growth is being driven essentially by the industrial and service sectors. Given this scenario, intellectual assets will be the most valuable resource of any enterprise or nation.

India’s current situation in this sector offers tremendous scope for improvement. The educational sector in India needs private sector participation to help it meet the continually increasing demand of the burgeoning Indian economy. This is evident even when considering the premier educational institutions in the country. One of the biggest outcomes of this situation is the continual exodus of Indian students to foreign educational institutions.

Whether in terms of student-intake capacity or ability to expose students to the latest developments in various fields or even in the availability of skilled teaching staff, new and planned private sector participation is called for.

Current Scenario

In the premier educational institutes of India, fewer than five per cent of the applicants are admitted.
Many of the unsuccessful aspirants for premier education institutions in India opt to go abroad for further study, while others join private institutions that charge extremely hefty fees.
Only four per cent of the population in the 18-24 age group get undergraduate education. (Source: NSSO 52nd Round Survey)
While there are an approximate 411 million Indians in the age group of 6-24, there were only 224 million enrollments in all educational institutions in 2003-04. (Source: http://education.nic.in/sector.asp)
For 224 million students enrolled in 2003-04, there were only 6.2 million teachers.

The Knowledge City – Building a shrine to learning

SKIL envisages the Knowledge Corridor as a city within a city. The Knowledge Corridor will be a specially planned fully residential Hi-tech city that will provide quality education, training and research in diverse fields.
A city with a fully functioning community committed to imparting and creating knowledge – from early childhood education to post graduate studies and applied research, while being supported by a host of residential, community and recreational facilities.
A hub for the generation of new knowledge – a place that provides researchers with world class facilities, a pool of well trained graduates, the chance to collaborate with like-minded people and the opportunity to transfer ideas into real world applications.

Among the many advantages that the Knowledge Corridor enjoys are:

An one-stop shop for all educational and business needs
A business and education enabling infrastructure
High performing and adaptable enabling technology
E-hosting and E-Learning facilities
A community of like-minded individuals and businesses
An environment rich in networking opportunities
Access to a large pool of knowledge workers at a single location.

The Key Features of the Knowledge Corridor are:

To be set up at multiple locations.
Will be part of larger integrated townships.
In each location, a minimum land area of between 200-250 acres will be acquired.
About 20 locations spread over the country have been identified.
The roll out will commence with the first Knowledge Corridor and over the next five years, the project work will commence at all the sites.
In a ten year timeframe, Knowledge Corridors at each site are expected to be complete and fully operational.
