Role in Nation Building

Demand for infrastructure facilities and services has always outpaced supply, to the extent that concerns have been raised in respect of the sustainability of economic growth of India in future. Large-scale investment and development of infrastructure projects by the private sector is the main solution to this problem.

SKIL was, in the early 1990s, looking out for unique and not 'us-too' projects, where it could capitalise on its strengths to conceive something that was all-encompassing and sweeping in its magnitude with an aim to help develop the country. With the risk-taking ability of first-generation entrepreneurs, SKIL embarked on path-breaking infrastructure development projects with substantial financial and human resource commitment and exacting precision.

As India continues its thrust on public-private partnerships, tremendous initiative from the private sector, coupled with keen foresight is required to enable the country to realise its full economic potential.  Various issues need to be addressed to achieve higher growth of output and employment, with a special emphasis on all-round human development.

Under the leadership and vision of Mr. Nikhil Gandhi, each of SKIL’s projects has been in areas that have traditionally been the reserve of the government.

Just some of the points showcasing the importance and relevance of SKIl’s various projects are:

The Pipavav Port was conceived and established when there was neither a policy nor precedence in the country for setting up a port in the private sector.

In difficult market conditions in 1998, Pipavav Port was the first project of its kind to attract such significant Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) from strategic investors like PSA Corporation, Singapore and from multilateral agencies like Commonwealth Development Corporation, U.K.

The concession agreement executed for Pipavav Port with the Gujarat Maritime Board and the Government of Gujarat was the first of its kind in the country and, till today, serves as a model agreement for similar ventures.

Similarly, the concession agreement executed for the Pipavav Railway serves as a model for similar ventures. This, too, was a first-of-its-kind project in India.

Projects like the Pipavav Expressway and Pipavav Railway are essential not only to provide connectivity to the residents of the remote areas but also for economic betterment of the entire state and the country.

The concept initiated by SKIL for “Double-Stacking” of containers on a container wagon has turned into reality with the cooperation of the Ministry of Railways. Double-stacked container trains have commenced operating between Pipavav and Jaipur since July 2006. This initiative has made India the first country outside North America to operate such “double-stacked” container trains.

Pipavav Port and Pipavav Shipyard shall generate a network of various medium and small scale-manufacturing units in a chain that will provide a tremendous boost to trade and commerce resulting in overall development of the region by creating employment opportunities for locals and raising their socio-economic standards.
Mumbai SEZ has been conceived as a generator of economic momentum. The SEZ would generate huge amounts of foreign investment and consummate economic activity, serving as an effective vehicle to contribute towards rapid growth of India's GDP.

The social infrastructure created to facilitate the business activity will improve the quality of life of the people employed in the region resulting in human resource development, thereby helping achieve the objective of SKIL Group.
